Who is walk-and-talk therapy suitable for?
This style of therapy may suit you if:
- You find movement calming, or conversations flow more naturally when walking.
- You're drawn to nature, or find traditional clinical settings a little too formal.
- You feel stuck, lost, disconnected, or anxious, and want to approach those feelings in a more open, less formal way.
- You're looking for a more flexible, informal, and humanistic approach to therapy.
Here is a good article on the practice in Psychology Today if you would like more information from a secondary source.
Who is walk-and-talk therapy potentially unsuitable for?
While many people benefit from the flexibility and informality of outdoor therapy, it's not the right fit for everyone. Walk-and-talk therapy may not be ideal for:
- People with mobility limitations or chronic pain conditions that make walking uncomfortable or unsafe. Accommodations can be made, such as sitting or standing for a portion of the session, but some walking is required to reach these places. Our telehealth option may be more appropriate.
- Clients who wish for or require high levels of structure, containment, or privacy within therapy. Our telehealth option may be more appropriate.
- People who are in acute crisis or experiencing active suicidal thoughts — in these cases, a more traditional or intensive support setting is usually more appropriate.
How do I know if this service is a good fit for me? / What is the intake process?
We know that starting therapy can feel like a big step. That's why we've designed our intake process to be thoughtful, transparent, and collaborative:
- Start with the pre-screening survey on our landing page here. It's a brief way for us to learn a little about what you're looking for, and whether walk-and-talk therapy might be a good match.
- From there, we offer a free 15-minute phone consultation. This is a chance for you and your counsellor to ask questions, get a feel for one another, and decide if it feels like the right fit.
- If you choose to go ahead, we'll send over a couple of intake forms to complete at your own pace.
- You'll then be booked in for a telehealth intake session (standard telehealth fee applies). This session gives you and your counsellor space to:
- Talk through your intake information
- Clarify your goals for therapy
- Discuss what walk-and-talk therapy looks like in practice
- Begin to shape a shared sense of how you'll work together
Do you offer alternatives to walk and talk therapy?
Yes, we offer telehealth options as well.
I have concerns around confidentiality, walking long distances or being in public, can I talk to my counsellor about my concerns?
Absolutely. If you have any concerns about the format, accessibility, or public nature of walk-and-talk therapy, please raise them — nothing is too small or too awkward to bring up.
Your comfort and safety are essential, and your counsellor will work with you to find an approach that suits your needs. This might include:
- Choosing shorter or more accessible walking routes
- Sitting on a bench, in a quiet field, or staying in one location during the session
- Using de-identified names during sessions
- Developing a plan for what to do if you're recognised during a session
What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?
See the payment policy for details on cancellations and rescheduling.
Are walk and talk sessions cancelled or rescheduled due to weather?
In most cases, sessions go ahead rain or shine — so we encourage you to dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather on the day.
That said, if the conditions are unsafe or likely to interfere with meaningful conversation — such as during thunderstorms, heavy rain, or extreme heat without access to shade — your session may be moved to a telehealth format, rescheduled, or relocated to a more sheltered spot.
We recommend checking the forecast in advance and getting in touch with your counsellor if you have any weather-related concerns. The more notice you can provide, the more easily we can adjust if needed.
General tips for walk and talk sessions.
- Dress for the weather.
- Wear comfortable shoes.
- Bring water if needed.
- Take breaks as needed — let your counsellor know what pace you are comfortable with and if you would like to stop at any point.
- Arrive a few minutes early.
- Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat during summer months.
What is your payment policy?
You can read the full payment policy here.
Do you offer a sliding scale / pro bono appointments?
To help make therapy more accessible, we offer limited sliding scale appointment slots to those experiencing hardship. If you're interested in this option, please mention it during the intake process.
At present, we are not able to offer pro bono sessions, though this may change as the practice grows. You're always welcome to enquire — we'll do our best to connect you with support that fits your needs if we are unable to.
